We ask our clients if they would like to share their story. We make a space for them to share their voice, something that has been silenced while they were in the abusive relationship. Here is one client’s story, in her own words:
I came to NMDVRC after my ex-husband became angry and threw me around and tried to strangle me in front of my kids. I was a very broken person with low self-esteem. I had been pushed around by my ex, my family and many of my friends my entire life. The only place I felt in control was at work. The people I worked with would never have guessed I was a victim. There, I’m the go to person to get the job done, a completely different person.
I went through a year of counseling. In the beginning I would just spend an hour crying and feeling helpless. My counselor worked with me to believe in myself, improve my self-esteem and taught me to take care of myself so that I can better take care of my kids.
I am now a different person. I’m happy, going to exercise classes and willing to take the time and spend money to take care of myself. I no longer engage in drama with my ex, I’m not letting his guilt trips work and I continue to check in with myself so that I keep my self-esteem positive.
This has been a long road and I still don’t get it perfect but I’m in such a better place and a much better example to my kids how a person should live.
